PERSONAL HISTORY:
Rolan is the second child born to Nigel and Ceana MacLaurence, whose household eventually included four children, three boys and a girl. His parents are simple folks, his father works as a machinist in one of the production plants that makes parts for starships, his mother is a teacher.

Due to his father's heavy accent, the computer recorded Rolan instead of Ronan as his first name, and since he felt that was making him somewhat unique despite his otherwise common appearance, he never changed it; though, Nigel refers to him as Ronan. His mother gave him his middle name Taog (pronounced Took), meaning "Poet", for she saw a softer side in him and hoped to inspire him to become an educator like herself.

Despite both of his parents' influence to pursue either of their fields of work, Rolan grew up to be dreaming of the stars. He read any piece of fictional and non-fictional literature about space and space travel he could get his hands on. By the time he was a teenager, he was well versed in all the species that made up the Federation. He had even studied their governments and societies, including their military tactics and weaponry. Fond of old fashioned armor and weapons, Rolan began taking lessons in swordsmanship and joined the archery team in school. Appearing to have a natural talent, he was fast mastering the skills.

While his older brother, Arthur, pursued an education to become a civil Engineer, and his younger brother, Hugh, later enrolled in college to become a Mathematics teacher, Rolan took the Academy entrance exam in 2374 and was admitted the following year. Briana, his little sister, is currently still in school, but she seems to be interested in the medical field and has confided in Rolan that she might want to pursue that field on a starship as well.

Although, his parents were not enthralled at his career choice, they supported Rolan's efforts throughout his Academy years and proudly attended his graduation ceremony in 2379.
STARFLEET HISTORY:
As a Cadet Rolan struggled with certain courses in his first two years at the Academy, but soon his maturity level grew and he began pulling himself together. (Part of the problem could be traced back to issues with communications between him and his teachers due to his heavy Scottish accent.) Throughout his four years, he focused on combat and weapon classes, pursuing a major in Security/Tactical and a minor in Engineering. He also participated in the archery team, and eventually made second place in the big Federation (IFA) tournament of 2378, where he competed against many different species.

The year before, Rolan had been assigned to one of the fighter squadrons, due to his high performance in piloting classes. In the next two years, he honed his skills even more and received his license as a shuttle and fighter pilot. Eventually, he graduated from the Academy with honors in 2379 and was assigned to the USS Athena, an Artemis-Class starship.

In the same year, Rolan traveled to Pasteur Station to rendezvous with the Athena and take on his first post. Only days after he had joined the crew, the Athena and a Romulan Warbird were sucked into a wormhole, during a stand against hostile forces, and thrown to the outskirts of the Beta-Quadrant, cut off from any way of contacting SFC.

Forced to accept the new circumstances, the Starfleet crew was joined by the remaining ones of the Romulan crew. Rolan found the situation rather interesting, since he felt it would be an opportunity to learn more about the Romulans. With the hope to expand his knowledge of a non-Federation member society, Rolan worked on making the best of the situation. Fortunately, many Romulan officers joined the Security/Tactical team, which gave him ample time to talk with members of the little-understood species. To his great delight, the Security/Tactical team was even assigned a Romulan department head.

Though, one thing bothered Rolan throughout their travels in the Beta Quadrant. He was certain that the Athena and all its crew had been declared MIA, after they had vanished. He hoped that his parents would not be too distraught and not give up hope to see him again. For once in his life, he understood why they had been reluctant to let him become a Starfleet officer. They didn't want to come home one day and be told their son was missing or dead. With that in mind, Rolan worked diligently to assist in efforts to return to the Alpha Quadrant, or at least make contact.

The moment came, when the Athena was able to contact SFC via slip-stream relay. Rolan was elated to be able to send a message to his family back on Earth to let them know he was alive and well. Though, despite the possibility of returning to Alpha Quadrant like some had chosen when the USS Eagle visited, he decided to stay on the ship that had become his home.
