Notes: |
The uprated Galaxy-class has been fielded by Starfleet in order to increase the combat capability of the class for service in the Dominion war. The improvements include an extra pair of phaser arrays mounted on the nacelles, an increase in the maximum speed to Warp 9.9, and various other enhancements. As with the Nebula-class, Starfleet refuses to comment on which Galaxies are enhanced and which are not. As with all vessels, the upgrades are an ongoing process. The vessel in question, NCC-72001 USS Endeavour was one of the so-called 'War Galaxies' under construction during the latter stages of the Dominion War, and is a direct replacement for the Nebula-class NCC-71805 USS Endeavour which was a casualty of that conflict. She was initially constructed without any of the usual scientific or diplomatic capabilities. The war ended before her completion, and work on the vessel slowed as Starfleet resources shifted to rebuilding those ships and bases that had survived the conflict. Once the 'fleet had been stabilized, the Endeavour and her sisters were completed......however with a few changes from the initial run. The work that was done included the addition of two new photon tubes for the Main Saucer Section, with dorsal and ventral locations. Four additional tubes were added to the Stardrive Section, two facing fore and two aft. These tubes replaced the original two tubes which were converted to fire quantum torpedoes.

Notes: |
Along with the increases in torpedo weapons capability, the phaser systems were likewise upgraded to the newer Type XII systems developed during the Sovereign-class starship's development. Likewise, the vessel's defensive systems have been upgraded as well with the addition a much improved shield system, a heavy double hull and 10 cm of ablative armour, and a high level structural integrity field. In addition, Shuttle Bays 2 and 3 have been converted to house the new Mako-class single-seat fighters. This version of the Galaxy has also been re-engineered to function as a complete vessel. No longer does she have the same separation features as the earlier models of this class, as this function was very rarely used. Saucer separation is still possible in emergency situations however. The hull structure in this area has been significantly strengthened to reflect this change in policy. Another change in policy is that no longer will this vessel carry civilians and families. The loss of the entire vessel compliment of the USS Yamato was an eye-opener for Starfleet. The normal crew compliment is 400, as it was during the Dominion War. There is accommodations for up to 200 Science and Mission Specialists, making for a total crew compliment of 600 if needed. The usual compliment will be around 500-550. One more interesting feature is the addition of a secondary matter-antimatter reactor in the saucer section, along with a small, deployable engine nacelle, a concept borrowed from the Prometheus-class. Should the Engineering section need to be jettisoned, the saucer can still manoeuvre at warp speeds......unlike the early version of the class where the saucer, once separated, was limited to impulse velocities only. The changes give the Galaxies a much needed boost, ensuring they will be a part of the 'fleet for a number of years to come. | |
