Commodore Lukas Fyrstk ... "Reflections" ... posted 060616

OFF

This log, long overdue, is done in memory of Amy.

ON

Life can certainly play strange and ironic tricks on a person.

Two weeks ago, Lukas could not have been happier. He had taken a few days, at his wife's urging, and met with her and the kids. Lukas thought things couldnt be better. Now, in the Beta Quadrant, in the heart of Enclave territory, his ship was surrrounded by twenty (at last count) Enclave ships, and despite Ambassador Fully's protests to the contrary, it appeared they did not want peace. They wanted the Eagle. Things definitely could be better at this point.

As Lukas studied the options for his ship, which were very few, his mind reflected to his visit with his family...

The trip had been planned since they had docked at Starbase 325 to debrief the four bridge crw members after their jaunt through time. The strange part was April insisted Lukas and Mal meet her and the kids at Starbase 294, a base situated between the Spaculaan sector and Sector 001. Lukas wondered why she did not wish to meet aboard Pathfinder as they usualy did, but he complied and made the trip to the starbase.

The quarters April had arranged for were very lavish. There was plenty enough room for him, her and the kids. Malachi even had his own room.

"This is pretty lavish for guest quarters," Lukas told his wife as she had shown him around.

"Well," April said just a bit too slowly. "They're not exactly GUEST quarters."

Lukas looked a bit baffled and was about to ask when his thoughts were interrupted by the station's comm system. "OPS to Commodore Fyrstk." Lukas was about to answer when April gently put her fingers against his lips.

"Fyrstk here," April answered.

"Sir. The last of the scheduled ships have docked. I am going off-shift and have left Lt. Moon in charge of OPS."

"Very good, Commander," April answered easily. She almost laughed at the puzzled look on her husband's face. "Why don't you join us for breakfast. I would like you to meet my husband."

"It would be my pleasure. I have been looking forward to meeting the other Commodore Fyrstk. See you then. Sentak out."

"Would you mahnd telling me whah he is treating you lahke his commanding officer," Lukas asked with more puzzlement in his voice than anything else.

"Well, " April answered. She watched his face for any trace of anger from the news she was going to deliver. "It's because I *AM* the base commander. I transferred here a week ago."

"You.... you left Pathfinder?"

"Mmmhmmm" April said softly.

"Why?" Lukas asked incredulously. "Why didn't you tell me before this. You didn't even tell me you were thinking about leaving."

April slipped her arms around Lukas. She leaned her head in against his chest and gave a soft sigh. "It wasn't an easy decision, Lukas. I loved that ship, and the crew upon her."

"Then what..."

April looked up into her husband's face. Her eyes held the sorrow of leaving her extended family behind, and the insecurity of a possible wrong decision. "After my last mission almost wen thorribly wrong, I decided I was being unfair to the children. They did not join Starfleet Lukas. I did, and i was forcing them to live the starship life."

"Starship lahfe hasn't hurt the kids, April," Lukas said soothingly. "Look at Mal. He's growing into quite an impressive young man."

"He is, "April said with pride. She turned to look at her oldest child, who was on the floor playing with the twins. Rohan and Ronov were climbing all over him. Every now and again he and Ronov would lock eyes as if they shared a bond on another level. April could tell that they did indeed share a deeper bond. "Malachi is a very special boy.

"And I want our children to all grow to be just as special," April said leaning her head, once again, on Lukas's chest. Lukas tightened his embrace on her to ensure her that no matter what decision she made he would stand by her. "Aboard the starship, their lives could be snuffed out so quickly. Luna has already made three friends and your mother is coming out next week to see us."

"Ah still don't know whah you didn't tell me about this," Lukas said.

"For the same reason I did not tell Terra until the commitment to the transfer was made," April said. She remembered how hurt Terra had felt that she hadn't been consulted on a decision of this magnitude. " and she wasn't happy about it in the least. But I didn't want you or her to talk me out of this. This is for our children Lukas. I know life aboard a starbase can be just as dangerous at times, but if I can provide them with a bit more safety, I will do so. Plus it also put us closer together on a more frequent basis."

She was right. Lukas couldn't argue with her at all. And he didn't. He decided right there and then to make April feel as if she had made the best decision of her life.

... that had been a very joyful visit. But that was then. Now it was Lukas's job to see to it he and his crew could all get home to see their families once more.

Gwen watched as the Enclave surrounded the Eagle. They would need help if they were to get out of this. Another ship would be nice, however their only hope for that was the Athena. Which was off who knows where and not answering any of the attempted hails. Then an idea came to her. It wouldn't be the best thing in the world, but it would certainly help matters a little. The Enclave would have another target.

"Captain, permission to launch all main auxiliary crafts?"

Lukas looked at Gwen for a moment, then realized what she meant. "Permission Granted."

"Tru, Soren, prepare the Eagle's Wing for launch. I want you two on it in less then 10 minutes.

As Ensign Harriman entered the bridge, Lukas looked over to him and said, "Ah want you to take over Ops Ensign. Cadet Wren, you may stay and watch if you so desahre."

Tru nodded to the Commander and moved over to the Turbolift, "Aye Sir. It'll be ready."

Soren followed the other two to the turbo lift.

Gwen parted company from Soren and Tru and made her way to the shuttle bay. She intended to launch the Falcon and Talon, and to have the flight crews fit the Sparrow and Starling with phaser cannons. She thought about asking Hailey to join her on the Falcon, but she didn't think now was an appropriate time. She wasn't certain about the cadet's piloting skills. Now was not the time to find them out either. It was more then likely that the Cadet was a very skilled pilot. But she was also an untested pilot. There would be time later to ascertain those skills. Assuming they got themselves out of the mess that the Ambassador had so willingly put them into.

She tapped her Comm Badge. "Lts Jackson, Ensigns K'drik and Talisman, Please report to the main shuttle bay immediately." She closed the signal as she entered the bay.

It didn't take her long to find the pilots who were on duty. They were all sitting around in the shuttle bay waiting, as was standard procedure for red alerts. None of them really expected to have much work to do. Gwen was going to fix that.

"Lt Cordis, I want the Falcon ready to launch in 5 minutes. No arguments." She turned to the officer seated next to the Lt. "Ens Jamis, prepare to launch the Talon in 5 minutes." Before the young officer could protest Gwen headed over to control areas of the bay. The two officers looked at each other for a moment and then hurried up to launch their respective ships.

"Chief Petty Officer Robins, I want the Starling and the Sparrows fitted with phaser cannons. Pick the next two best available pilots and have them launched ASAP."

The Petty Officer didn't even bat an eye. "Aye Commander." Then he turned to his crew who were sitting there playing cards. "You heard the Commander. You have 10 minutes to get those cannons fitted." They all immediately jumped to their feet.

Gwen headed back to the Falcon, and looked over to the entrance as Jackson, K'drik and Talisman all came rushing into the shuttle bay. "You three over here."

Gwen started speaking before the others even had a chance to catch their breaths. "Jackson, As soon as the Talon is ready I want you and Ens Jamis out of this bay. There are 20 Enclave ships attacking the Eagle. K'drik, Talisman, help the Chief Petty Officer prepare the Sparrow and Starlings. Once they are ready, I want you two out in the fight as well. Any questions?"

When they all shook their heads no, Gwen responded, "Then let's get going." She turned and headed to the Falcon.

As she entered the ship, Lt. Cordis was just firing up the engines. "We'll be ready to launch in 2 minutes Commander."

Gwen took the Tactical chair and ran a quick diagnostic, "Good."

Just seconds before they were going to request permission to depart, "Bridge to Cmdr. Marqusa. Looks like you missed the fight. The Enclave ships have broken off. We've had a little assistance from the Athena.

"Commander Marqusa here. Acknowledged Ensign." She closed the comm signal, and then contacted the Talon to let her know to stand down. She also contacted Tru and Soren to inform them of the change. Then she headed out of the Falcon.

Once she moved over to the crew working on the Sparrow and Starling, she couldn't help but smile. They were almost done with fitting the cannons onto the shuttles. Gwen couldn't help but think that the Eagle had some of the finest crew in the fleet. She also made sure that they knew that when she informed them that the fight was over and that they could unfit the shuttles now. A few of them grumbled a little, but they all got to work undoing the job they had just done.

Gwen nodded to the other officers who came out of the Talon. She told them they could report to wherever they were before she pulled them off for this job. Then she headed back up to the bridge.

"Aye Sir." Gwen took a quick look around the bridge and then her eyes rested on Cadet Wren. She had wanted to see the Cadet's piloting skills, but in a none combat intensive situation. This seemed like a good time. Gwen could also tell that the Cadet was angry about something, and most likely angry at the Captain. This might serve as a good distraction from that.

Of course, there was still the chance that the Enclave would come back soon. It was probably a good idea to also bring an experienced pilot along just in case Wren wasn't up to par with things.

"Cadet Wren, Commander Lost, please join me on the Falcon.

Hailey was still situated at Ops, intently looking at her station. Though, in reality she was fuming. Commodore Stryker had been right about the Captain. She had started to have her doubts. When Gwen called her name, It barely registered. It took her a moment before she looked up and realized she was being addressed. It took even longer for her to realize that the Commander and picked her to go on the assignment. This was a huge switch. Hailey figured Gwen really disliked her, but she couldn't really blame the Commander. After all, Hailey was constantly flirting with the Commanders boyfriend. Well, sort of. Hailey wasn't sure they were officially dating or anything, and none of the crew she asked seemed to know either. It was just a weird situation.

Standing up, "Aye sir." The cadet headed over towards the turbolift. She was happy to be going, even though Tru would be going too. Hopefully he would remain in the background, like he usually did.

Tru looked up from the PADD he had been "working" on. Being a preceptor wasn't that bad of a job. Especially when the preceptee was good. Hailey was definitely good, which allowed Tru more leisure time. With Hailey around, it was much easier to get away with playing his games. Also, being over at the Ops station helped too. He wasn't in the direct line of site of everyone.

Tru was a little surprised that Gwen wanted both Hailey and himself going. Actually, Tru was surprised that Gwen wanted Hailey going. Even with as dense as he was, he could tell that the two females didn't seem to like either very much. He hoped he wouldn't have to keep the peace between them. They both could have very fiery tempers at times. The last thing he wanted was to be trapped in the delta flyer when those two tempers flared.

He stood up and headed to the turbo lift with Hailey. This was probably going to be one long trip.

The three made their way to the shuttle bay. Once their Gwen ordered, "Hailey, get the Falcon flight ready. I want to be ready to go in less then 10 minutes. Tru, help her if she needs it."

"I don't need his help." Hailey said flatly and marched straight to the Falcon to start it up. In her short time on the Eagle, she had not yet stepped foot inside the Delta Flyer. In fact, in her entire career in Starfleet, she had never actually stepped foot inside a Delta Flyer, real or holodeck versions. Still, she knew the principles behind it. It couldn't be that much different then the craft that she'd already flown.

Gwen bite back a retort and looked at Tru, telling him with her eyes that he better dang well keep that girl under control. Then she headed off to talk to the Chief Petty Officer. She wanted to give him a heads up and let him know that Hailey would be filing a flight plan shortly, and that they would then be heading out.

Tru shook his head and quickly followed Hailey. As he expected, this was going to be a long trip.

"Hailey, you need to be more careful with your tone of voice." Tru told the young woman as he entered the Falcon.

"Why? I'm sick and tired of people constantly questioning my abilities. It's frustrating and annoying. I know what I'm doing. I wouldn't be out here if I didn't."

"That may be. But you are still a Cadet. You don't have any real experience. Have you even been inside a Delta Flyer? There aren't too many of them, and I can't imagine the Academy running drills with them. Sure, they are similar to other ships. But, the design and actual capabilities are different.

"Look, you just need to be more careful. You can be sent home at any moment should the Captain deem you not fit for this assignment. If you keep mouthing off, that will happen."

Mumbling, "yeah, whatever." She went about her work figuring out how to get the engines started. She also pulled up a map of the area and worked on figuring out the best course to get to where they were going.

Tru just shook his head. When he got back he was going to have to see Ratch for some headache medicine.

Gwen boarded the Falcon and sat down in the Tactical seat. She then used the Flyer's communication system to contact the Athena flight crew.

"Commander Marqusa to Athena Flight Leader."

"This is Lt. Railinton, go ahead Commander." Came the response from the Athena. She and three Romulan ships had just taken off from the Athena, headed towards the planet in question. They had just formed up in such a manner that the Romulan ships could use their cloak to mask the Starfleet shuttle that she was flying in.

"Lt. the Falcon will be joining you on this mission. It's our Delta Flyer and it has submode. Can you send us your flight plan? We'll follow in close proximity."

"Of course Commander." She set the flight plan to the Falcon.

"Thank you Lt. I'd like to keep communications to a minimum."

"Acknowledged."

"Hailey, are you ready?" Gwen asked looking at the Cadet seated near her.

"Of course." Hailey responded, biting back a comment about having wasted time figuring out her own flight plan. Though, the course that the Athena crew was taking was actually very similar to the one that Hailey had figured out. Still, it has been pointless for her to do it.

"Then take us out of here." Gwen quickly checked to make sure that the tactical situation of the Flyer was up to where it needed to be. She also quickly scanned to make sure that they had all the equipment they would need.

Hailey contacted the Eagle and requested permission to depart. Once she had sent the flight plan in they gave her clearance. She lifted the Falcon off the deck and took her out the shuttle bay doors using thrusters only.

"Engage Submode Mr. Lost, something . . . creative." Gwen said and gave Tru a smirk, "I'm sure you can come up with something."

"Aye Commander, that shouldn't be a problem." He quickly engaged submode and thought about making the ship look like one of the aliens from his latest game. However, he didn't think Gwen wanted him to be THAT creative. Instead he settled for looking like a small Enclave transport ship. The kind that the Enclave military pretty much just ignored as being too insignificant to care about.

Flight Engineer Kutula was appalled. Never had she seen such insolence in a person beore, and this was in a cadet no less. Kutula had been working on Starling and witnessed the exchange between Commander Marqusa and that new cadet they picked up at Starbase 325. If the cadet had spolen to her like that, Kutula would have knocked her half way across the shuttle bay. Kutula was about to go comment to Chief Robins when Lt. Commander Haas came into the shuttle bay.

"Chief," Haas called out to Robins. "W-we need the Talon fitted up for m-mining expeditions"

"You got it, Commander," Robins replied. He then glanced around the shuttle bay. "Kutula, Hartvick! We got a new job!"

Kutula would just have to wait with her thoughts on the cadet, but it was certain the "gossip lanes" would love the dirt on the new cadet.

Commodore Lukas Fyrstk ... "Into the Base ... begin" ... posted 060715

The hole through the planet's crust had been completed. Sensor reports showed that the ground defense systems had been shut down. Lukas guessed that was because there was no more shuttles in the air for it to target. Now, there was the matter of what appeared to be a bas buried deep in the planet's surface. What was in it? Whose base was/is it? Sensor reports also showed the enrgy beams were not the same as the Enclave ships put out, so there was a chance it was not an Enclave base. There was only one way to find out the answers to these questions.

"Commander Marqusa," Lukas said turning to his exec. "Prepare a team to go down to the base. Make certain to be aware of any automated defense systems within the base itself."

Lukas knew, with Gwen, he really didn't need to include that last part.. If anything, Gwen was the consumate security officer. She would know where and waht to be looking for. Lukas turned his attention to the still-open comm channel between his ship and the USS Athena.

"Lt. Svonn. Ah would lahke you to have a team standing bah as well," he said into the speaker. "As soon as mah initial team secures the base we can all fahnd out what's insahde. Commander Haas. Have all shuttles hold thir current positions until we are certain of what we are dealing with."

"Aye sir." Gwen stood up and looked over at the tactical station. "Soren, pick 2 security officers and join me in the transporter room. Tru, I want you there as well." She headed towards the turbolift.

Lt. Soren nodded in acknowledgment. She contacted Lt jg Jackson and Ens Talisman and informed them to meet in the transporter room. Then she followed Gwen.

Tru nodded and left the ops station to join the others.

Hailey looked from Tru to Gwen to Lukas. She was disappointed that she wasn't going with. The last time that Tru went on a mission and she was left behind, the Captain kicked her out of her station. She wondered if he was going to do that this time too.

As is standard procedure on any starship in the fleet, Ensign Harriman entered the bridge to replace Lt. Commander Lost. He exchanged glances with the commanding officer. The look Lukas returned told him to man the auxiliary station and "Watch over" the cadet. The ship was not going into any current situation which would require a more experienced officer. Harriman gave the cadet a quick smile as he moved tot he station adjacent to the main OPS station.

Hailey smiled, it wasn't all bad. Though, she still wished she could go with the away team. It would be really cool to see what it looked like down in the planet. However, she was glad not to be kicked out of, what she had become accustomed to as HER station.

Gwen entered tapped her comm badge as she entered the turbo lift. "Commander Marqusa to sickbay. Please send a doctor to join me in the Transporter Room for an away mission. We are not sure of the conditions that we will face, so come prepared."

"This is Lt Muerta in sickbay. I'll have one of the docs join you Commander."

"Acknowledged." The three head to the transporter room.

When they entered the transporter room the security and medical officers were already present. The six officers donned environmental suits and stepped up onto the transporter pad.

"Weapons on stun only gentleman." She turned her attention to the transporter chief. "Energize when ready." She felt the familiar dematerialization as they were transported down to the planet.

Commodore Lukas Fyrstk ... "The USS Pinta" ... posted 060821

USS Pinta NCC 80109
Luna-Class designed by Sean Tourangeau
for Simon & Shuster
ON

At maximum warp, it did not take long for the USS Eagle to reach the now-battle scene between two Federation starships and five Enclave destroyers. To be hones, the destroyers had no chance. As Lukas watched the battle on the Eagle's virtual-view screen, he noted how the Athena was directing her shots to disable and the Luna-class, U.S.S. Pinta, was destroying Enclave vessels. By the time the Eagle entered the system, the immediate Enclave threat was abated, but more ships were on their way.

"Hail both the Athena and the Pinta," Lukas ordered Cadet Wren who was at the OPS console. The cadet acknowledged that both ships were on comm, and Lukas ordered her to put both on the viewscreen. "Cadet. Get me the command codes for that ship."

"Lt. Svonn," Lukas sad first to the Athena's acting CO. "Ah want you to close on the Pinta and extend your clooak around her. On mah orders both ships will return to the base."

"Captain," came the voice of the Pinta's commanding officer, interrupting any response from the Athena's CO. "You have no authority over me or my ship. We wil go where we have been ordered."

"That is Commodore to you, Captain," Lukas retorted. H rarely resorted to pulling rank, and even disliked doing so, but attitude had to be dealt with with atitude. "Ah am in this sector under orders and therefore am the ranking officer."

"Commodore!" the Pinta's CO came back with, he still had not identified himself. "My authority goes higher than you, I can have you..."

"Captain," Lukas interrupted. "Ah'm not going to pretend to care where your authority comes from at the moment. Mahne comes directly from Starfleet Command, and mah orders are to take command of your vessel. The more tahme we argue over who's got more authority is more tahme fro the rest of the Enclave ships to make it tougher for us to get away.

"Now! We cain make this easy, and discuss who's authority tops whose, over a cup of coffee, or Ah will take your vessel bah force, as Ah am now ordered to do. You may be able to take mah ship, but Ah doubt you will be able to take mah ship and the Athena, who IS operating under mah command. Your choice, Captain."

It took a moment before the Pinta captain replied. Lukas guessed he was now weighing his options for success. Two Federation ships and now more Enclave ships closing on their position. "Very well, Commodore" came the subdued voice of the Pinta's commanding officer. "Lead the way. We will follow, and we have our own cloaking device."

This caused Lukas to raise an eyebrow in surprise, but should he really be surprised? If this ship actually traveled here under someone's orders, it was more than likely a Section 31 ship, that branch of Starfleet that doesn't exist (yet his own brother was a part of), why should he be surprised to find it had a cloaking device?

"Wise choice, Captain," Lukas replied. "Make certain your transponder is transmitting on Starfleet frequency 312." Lukas wanted to keep track of the ship under cloak. He didn't have to confirm with Svonn that should the transpoder stop, the Pinta would then become prey .

Lt. Commander Tru Lost ... "Access Codes" ... posted 060823

:SNIP:

"Cadet. Get me the command codes for that ship."

:ON:

Ensign Harriman looked over to Cadet Wren. "Do you have a clue how to get the codes?"

"Not without someone giving them to us, or finding some sort of backdoor in the brand new class of ship. I don't have a clue." Hailey responded sitting at the main Ops station. She was now beginning to understand a little of why she might have been kicked out of her position before. There were definitely things that the Academy didn’t teach you. Still, they shouldn’t have just replaced her like that. She was good in a fight, and all they would have had to do was what is now happening, having someone else there to help just in case.

But there was time enough for those thoughts later. Right now she needed to focus on what was at hand. Which mean, getting the command codes for the Pinta.

Harriman smiled. He kept his voice low so that only Hailey could hear him."No problem, Cadet. We have to be careful, they can shut us down quickly."

"See if you can establish a link with their computer."

"Won't they be trying the same thing on us?" Hailey attempted to open a link to their computer through a backdoor kind of way. She didn't want to alert anyone on that ship to what she was doing.

"You know," Harriman said. "That is a good point." He quickly turned tot he auxiliary console he was sitting at and entered some commands. He instructed the computer to access a program Lt. Commander Haas had put into the system should a ship try and access the command codes without authorization.

"Keep an eye on your screen there," he instructed Hailey. "If they DO try and access our codes, theirs will come up right away."

Hailey nodded, then thought for a moment. "Do we have a way of rotating our command codes automatically?

"And, what about the Athena?" Thoughts kept popping into her mind as she started to get a little side tracked from what the Captain had actually asked her to do. "Wouldn’t the Pinta go after them too? Or maybe instead? "

"We don't have to worry about our codes," Harriman said. "Cmdr. Haas already saw to that. The Athena is vulnerable though. You may want to pass a message to them."

"Can I pass them that program too? Or is it ship sensitive?"

"I'm not certain if it is ship-sensitive or not," Harriman replied. "I wouldn't pass them the program without consulting with Commander Haas."

"Okay." Hailey said as she sends the communiqué to the Athena with the warning. "Now what do I need to do to get the Command Codes for the Pinta?"

Harriman turned away from his console, and towards the command area. "Captain? Can you give Cadet Wren authorization to access the Pinta's computer?"

Lukas nodded and tapped in his authorization on the console of his chair. "Authorization complete, Ensign."

"Thank you, sir," Harriman said. He then turned to Hailey. "Try a normal link-up."

Hailey attempted to link up to the computer on the Pinta, and frowned. She tried accessing a non essential part of the system, to see if that made any difference. Then she looked at Harriman, "Okay, what am I doing wrong?"

"Nothing," Harriman said with a scowl on his face. "That's not normal computer protocol. Something tells me there's more to that ship.." He thought a moment, then said, "Time to get sneaky."

He turned back to his console and accessed yet another program. As he was checking through the list, Hailey's console let off a sharp beep and a set of numbers appeared in the upper left hand corner of the screen.

"Looks like we have something here Ensign. I think they are trying to access our computer. Or at least, someone is." She pointed to the series of numbers that came up on her screen.

Harriman turned from his console to look at the main OPS console. "Thank you, Cmdr. Haas," he muttered. "Enter that number and send it back to Pinta's computer."

Hailey quickly entered the numbers that she received on her screen and sent them back to the Pinta's computer system in attempt to gain access.

"Let's see if this works."

While Hailey was doing that, Harriman turned back to his console. Sure enough. The Pinta OPS officer had tried to gain access to the Eagle's command controls. Had he not put Haas's program into play, they would now have access to the Eagle systems, and not just defense. The Eagle computer was now sending back false data to the Pinta making them believe they had access. Harriman saw the command go forth to shut down the warp engines. He turned back to Hailey's console. There was a complete display of the Pinta's systems. It showed her cloak status as well as all weapons.

"We're in Hailey. Good job. Inform the captain and let him know they tried shutting us down."

"Captain, we now have access to the Pinta's systems. Also, she attempted to shut us down."

Commodore Lukas Fyrstk ... "What We're Here For" ... posted 060825

In the captain's reafy room of the USS Pinta, Captain Sahd Benjii sat behind his desk. Commander Inpri, the ship's first officer sat opposite him. Neither officer looked very happy.

"How long we going to let them hold us," Inpri asked.

"Til we get control of the ship again," Benjii replied. "Fyrstk's peopl were expecting us to try and take control of their ship. I would like a copy of the program they used."

Inpri nodded in agreement. "We'd never be in this predicament if the cloak hadn't failed the minute we dropped out of slip-stream."

"Who sent the distress call tho," Benjii asked. "I never ordered it."

"That would be Ensign Thorne," Inpri told him. "He thought he would send in anticipation of your orders."

"Have a talk with Thorne," Benjii said somewhat ired. "We cannot have stuff like this revealing our position."

Inprii nodded his acknowledgement. They were a Section 31 ship. Their ship's capabilities and missions were know only to one admiral. He was about to ask another question, when the chimes sounded.

"Enter," Benjii ordered. The dor opened and his chief science officer, Lt. Korine enttered. As the science officer crossed the room, Benjii noted she looked like she had something very interesting to impart.

"Captain," Se said when she reached his desk. She sat down without him bidding her to do so. "The sensors are still functional. Since we have entered orbit of this planet, I have been doing some scanning. It seems the Eagle and Athena have found something on this planet."

"Something, Lt?" Inpri asked a bit impatiently. "Like what?"

"I am guessing some sort of base," Korine replied. "An underground base, sir. I have Starfleet communicator signals beneath the surface of the planet."

Benjii and Inpri, both, sat forward with great interest.

"An underground base?" Benjii said. "The data we have indicates that is all they built."

"You think the Eagle found what we were looking for?" Inpri asked.

"I would say te probabilities were high, sir," Korine answered, even though the question had been directed tot he captain. "That is why I brought it to your attention."

"And you were right to do so, Lt.," Benjii said quickly. "Go see what more you can find out, but don't be too obvious about it. Eagle's security officers are watching al l of our moves."

"Aye, sir," Korine said. She quickly rose and moved out of the ready room. Benjii watched the look on his exec's face as she walked away.

"Don't really like her, do you," Benjii asked once the doors were again closed.

"No, I don't, "Inpri replied. She's abrasive ans oft times close to insubordinate."

"But she is good at her job," Benjii added.

"Her one saving grace," Inpri remarked. "So how do we find out what the Eagle has found?"

Benjii smiled instantly. "We ask."

Commodore Lukas Fyrstk Commander Gwen Marqusa
Lt. Svonn (Athena CO) ... "Surprise Orders" ... posted 060904

ON

LUkas stood by the railing of the upper section of the bridge. He looked to his OPS officer for word on the two who were injured on the planet. It had already been reported that they were beamed to the Athena sick bay. Lukas Fyrstk: "Commodore," Cadet Wren called out. "Dr. Fyrstk reports both patients are doing fine."

"Thank you, Cadet," Lukas acknowledged. "We will be in the ready room." He turned and looked once again to his XO and the Athena Co and nodded towards the ready room door.

Gwen nodded to Lukas and headed towards the Ready Room door.

Lt. Svonn turned, also to the captain's ready room. Hew ould be certain to commend Dr. Fyrstk for his quick actions in saving the two Eagle crew-persons.

Lukas walked into the room and back behind the desk. "Now what do we do about the Pinta?"

Gwen took a seat, "That's a good question. They do have slip stream, so we could take control, and take them back that way."

Cadet Wren recieved the incoming call for the Captain. "Cadet Wren to Commodore Fyrstk."

"Fyrstk here," Lukas said to the comm unit. "Go ahead, Cadet."

"Captain, the Pinta is hailing. Lt. Soren says it's important."

"Send it in here, Cadet."

"Acknowledged" She transfered the incoming call to the ready room.

Lukas turned to the comm screen as the image of his security officer, currently aboard the Pinta, flashed on the wall. "Go ahead, Lt."

"Commodore, Captin Benjii would like to talk to you. He said it was important."

Lukas raised an eyebrow in surprise. He glanced at the other two officers with him. They now had a name for the Pinta's command. He looked back at the screen. "Have Captain Benjii beam over. He will be escorted to mah ready room."

"Aye Captain. I'll make arrangements."

"I wonder what he wants." Gwen said.

Lukas turned back to Gwen and Svonn. "Well, well. What do ya suppose he wants. Gwen. Have a security team meet and escort the good captain here."

Gwen contacted security to have two guards sent to meet the Captain. "They are on their way Captain."

A few moments later, the chime to the ready room door sounded. LUkas ushered the caller in. Captain Benjii entered the ready rom. He was a tl, dark-featured, olive-skinned man. He nodded curtly to Svonn, Gwen, and finally Lukas.

"Commodore Fyrstk," Benjii started. "I am Sahd Benjii, captain of the Pinta."

Lukas nodded to his new guest and gestured towards an empty seat. "Ah would lahke to say it was a pleasure to meet you, Captain, but to mah knowledge, you are now renegade. To add to that, you trahed taking control of mah ship."

Gwen looked to the new Captain, then nodded to the security escort that they should wait outside. She turned her attention back to the renegade Captain. Not feeling the need to add anything at this point.

"I assure you, Commodore," Benjii stated cooly. "I am not renegade. I am here under orders. Orders that may not be privvy to your higher ups."

"And why would that be, Captain? "Lt. Svonn asked evenly. "To my understanding, we are all of the same fleet. We all answer to the same CinC."

Benjii regarded the Vulcan for a moment. He noted the rank pips on his collar and wondered what station he served aboard this ship. "I do not have to answer to you, Lieutenant."

"You will answer his question," Lukas said a bit icily. "He has been serving as CO aboard the Athena for quahte some tahme now. He has lead the ship through quahte a bit of peril and has earned the rahght."

Benjii's whole demeanor towards Svonn changed. "My apologies, Captain. " HE looked right at Svonn as he said it. You could hear the difference in his voice. "But still, I am not at liberty to say. I answer only to a certain admiral."

"And which Admiral is that Captain?" Gwen asked. She was suspicious of the Captain, and didn't trust him one bit. "Surely you can tell us that."

Benjii regarded Gwen for a moment. He did know who she was. The Eagle's XO was getting a reputation much like her commanding officer. "As much as I would like to tell you, Commander Marqusa, surely, I cannot. There are faction of Starfleet that some would rather not acknowledge. They get things done.... their way. For now, let's just say I am part of the faction."

"You cannot tell us who you are getting orders from? You are willing to take the fall for everything?"

Benjii, nodded. "That is one of the risks I accepted, when I took this assignment, Commander. " His voice held nthing but calmness and respect for his fellow command officers.

"So whah did you want to see us, Captain?" Lukas asked.

"That base, you found," Benjii answered right away. "My science officer was able to detect it and your officers down there. It could be why I am here."

Gwen did not like the Captain, but she did admire the his loyalty, however annoying it was at the moment.

Hailey recieved an incoming call with high priority. She answered it, and then contacted the Captain. "Commodore Fyrstk. There's an incoming call for you. High Priority."

"Oh boy," Lukas muttered. "More surprises. "Send it to my console, Cadet."

"Yes sir." She transfered the call into the ready room.

Admiral Janeway's face apeard on the smaller screen situated on Lukas's desk. It was faced away from the other officers. "Are you alone, Lukas?"

"No, Admiral," Lukas answered. "Ah have Comander Marqusa, Lt. Svonn and Captain Benjii of the Pinta here."

"Very good," Janeway said with a smile. If Benjii was there that meant Lukas had been successful in capturing the ship. "Put me on the larger viewer."

Lukas did so. Admiral Janeway now appeared on the wal where Lt. Soren had previously been. She looked at the gathered officers, smiled again then looked directly at Benjii. "Admiral Jellico sends his regards, Captain. You are now under orders to return to the Alpha Quadrant and to headquarters."

Benjii nodded his head in compliance. Obviously, Janeway had mentioned the right name. "Aye, sir. We will return as soon as Commodore Fyrstk returns control of our ship to us."

Janeway couldn't help but smile in a gloating way. Anytime one of "hers" beat one of "his" it was agood day. "Lukas. You are authorized to release the Pinta and allow her to return on her own. " She looked back to Benjii. "I will look forward to seeing you in a couple days, Captain." Benjii simply acknowleged this with a nod.

"Now," Janeway said looking back to Lukas and the others. "Lukas. You will also be returning to the Alpha Quadrant. Bring the bodies of Captain Namid and Commander Talluhuh back to Starbase 325. They will be relayed to a medical ship from there."

As Lukas was nodding his acknowledgement of her orders, Janeway looked to Gwen specirically. "Commander Marqusa. You will be staying behind."

Gwen raised her eyebrows, "Oh? Why is that Admiral?"

"You are to be taking temporary command of the USS Athena. The uncovering of that base has brought a lot of legends to light. Some I am sure, Captain Benji can fill you in on.

"The base has been created by a legendary advanced race. Their name is still uknown to us, but if that base is half as advanced as your reports are indicating, I think you have just proven their existance.

"The
Athena is being assigned a new commanding officer. Until she arrives, I want you to get that ship out of Enclave space and find other evidence of this race, or the race itself."

Throughout this whole "surprise" Lt. Svonn sat stoicly. He did not even flinch when it was revealed he would be replaced as commanding officer.

Gwen looked on in surprise, "You want me to take command of the Athena? Why me? What I mean Admiral, is that Lt. Svonn has been doing a good job commanding the Athena. Why not just have him continue until the new CO arrives?"

"Lt. Svonn has been doing an outstanding job," Janeway corrected. "He is in fact up for promotion because of it. However. Because we will be extending Ahtena's mission in the Beta Quadrant, I don't want the crew to think we have forgotten about them. Putting you in temporary command will show them just that.

"You will make it clear to
Athena's crew, that their continued stay in the Beta Quadrant will be voluntary. Anyone wishing to return to the Alpha Quadrant, may do so aboard the Eagle, or return with you, Gwen, when the new commanding officer takes over."

"How long will it be till the new CO arrives?" Gwen wasn't overly sure she wanted to take the assignment. But she knew she didn't want to refuse to take it either.

"The new Commanding officer has already been chosen," Janeway answered. "There is a new shuttle being built which she will arrive on in a few weeks."

Gwen nodded, she still had a ton of questions but figured this was not the time nor the place for them.

"Does the offer to return home extend to the Romulan crew as well?"

"The answer to that is up in the air at the moment, Commander," Janeway said.

Lt. Svonn actually raisd an eyebrow in surprise at this. He ooked again at Janeway. "Up in the air, Admiral?"

"Well," Janeway began. From the look on her face it seemed as this was ging to be one of those "long stories." "We contacted the Romulan government. We have offered to tranport the remaining Romulan crew back to Romulan space, but they have not yet given us an answer."

"The Romulan crew had mentioned a certain amount of shame for losing their ship, Admiral," Svonn noted. "Perhaps they are not wanted back."

"They should be given the option to return home, just like the Starfleet Officers.

"Admiral. Before offering to return any officer home, why don't we wait until the Romulans have at least given an answer. I don't want any resentment to form within the crew."

Admiral Janeway considered this suggestion for a moment. "That is an excellent suggestion, Commander. Work it that way. If anyone, Romulan or Starfleet should ask about going home, assure them, that if it is their wish, they will be returned to the Alpha Quadrant.

"I will not pretend to speak for the Romulans. I am hoping Lt. Svonn's conjecture is not the case. However, should the Romulans not want their officers back, I can promise we will find them homes in the Alpha Quadrant.
"

"They'd probably prefer death in that case, Admiral," Captain Benjii spoke up suddenly.

Lukas sat and listened to this exchange. He knew Benjii was right. He'd often seen it in his own father's eyes. Thankfuly it was the love Luktra had felt for Lukas's mother which prevented him from taking his own life.

"I would agree with Captain Benjii on this one. However, I think I have an idea on how to handle the situation Admiral. If you are willing to leave it up to me."

Janeway smiled. She had made a right choice in wanting Gwen to temporarily stay aboard the Athena. "What would you do, Commander?"

"Well, the best would be to tell the truth. The Romulan officers are going to know what their own government is likely to do. I will make an announcement to the crew letting them know that a new CO has been assigned and will be out here within the month. Also, tell them that should they wish to go home, they will be free to do so when I leave. I will inform the Romulan Officers that we have no heard back yet from their government concerning what role the Romulans will play on this mission, if any. Also let them know that should they choose not to remain on the Athena, they will be allowed transport back to Federation Space and returned home.

"I do not believe that the Romulans would refuse to allow them back home. They may face honor and disgrace by doing so however. At least this way leaves the decision up to them.

"I will also want each crew member on the ship to give me an answer on whether they wish to return home. That way, the new CO will be able to bring out fresh troops and keep the Athena at full staff."

"That sounds like a workable solution, Commander," Janeway said. "Also inform the Romulan officers that even though you are taking over, they are still expected to act as part of the Athena crew until we hear otherwise."

"Of course Admiral. I don't intend to make many changes to the way the ship is currently opperating."

"Good," Janeway acknowledged. "Gwen, Svonn. I cannot tell you how important this mission has become to Starfleet. This race could very well have technology that could aid us in the threat that looms before us."

Gwen nodded. She knew all to well the effects that the TKill could have on the federation, she'd seen it, more then once. It was something she was not looking forward too. "We will do everything we can Admiral."

"Admiral?" Lukas finally spoke up. "Whah the Athena? The Pinta, and the Eagle are more advanced ships than her. It is obvious this is what Captain Benjii's mission is. Whah not allow him to finish?"

Benjii nodded his agreement with Lukas's question. He also developed a bit more respect for the commodore.

"For starters, Lukas, the Athena has already established a presence in the quadrant. If more and more Federation ships start showing up, it could just give the Enclave something more to worry about and start focusing on ways to bring the fight back to the Alpha Quadrant. We don't want that.

"Secondly, and this one plain and simple, Admiral Jellico ordered them home. He was not too pleased to hear about the Pinta's discovery."

"Works for me, Admiral," Lukas commented. He looked over to Benjii. To the captain;s credit, he did not hang his head in shame, nor did he offer any excuses for the failure of his mission. Lukas had a suddwn feeling that it wasn't anything Benjii would have had control over.

"Good," Janeway said with finality. "Are there any question, from anyone at this time?"

Gwen shook her head and looked at the others.

"None at this time, Admiral," Lt. Svonn responded.

"Nothing from me either, Admiral," Lukas chimed in.

"Very well then. Captains. You have your orders. Oh, and Captain Benjii. Before departing you will turn over any data your ship has concerning this race."

Benjii shifted in his chair. He did not appreciate Admiral Janeway's orders, especially considering he answered to Jellico, but she was right. The main purpose was to find this race, or whatever they could about the race. "Of course, Admiral."

"Good," Janeway said. "Good luck to you all. Janeway out."
