"Sprout"
by: Thomas Hart

JDL: Commander Hart, Vice Admiral Mallory and Sprout

NOTE: This takes place following the sim of 251105.

Commander Thomas Hart stepped onto the bridge, the Russel Terrian by his side. They paused at the lift doors and looked around.

"This is the command center, for our ship," the chief engineer explained to Sprout. He quickly made introductions, to those around the bridge, which included Captain McCloud, Commander Dutcher, Lt. Banning at sciences and Vice Admiral quenton Mallory, who stood by the science station. Sprout recognized, and did not require an introduction to Lt. Commander Wren, Hart's mate, who sat at the OPs console. Hart let, what he considered, the magnificence of the bridge to sink in to the visitor.

Sprout dipped his head in respect to the others. "Thank you captain for allowing me to tour the ship and learn about some of your systems. It's so very exciting."

Captain McCloud rose and gave the Russel Terrian a nod of acknowledgement. "I am glad yoou are not finding it boring," McCloud replied. "And you should be glad to know, we have found a way to send you home."

Sprout perked his ears in interest. "Then you know how we got here," he asked eagerly.

"We do," came the calm voice of Vice Admiral Quenton Mallory. "If our calculations are correct, of the residual energies on your... conveyance's hull, you were tunneling your way home. However, the tunnel opened in an ion storm, which enabled the opening of the sliding portal between our universes. Your conveyance was thrust through the portal."

Sprout's alert tail shuttered slightly as he listened intently to the information. "Wow! How fascinating! What are the odds?"

"I'd say the odds were about eight hundred, thirty-three thousand to one," Mallory replied. He had a look in his eyes which made it difficult to determine if the man were joking or not. "As soon as Vet. Rinette is recovered, I understand we will be sending you back."

Sprout nodded in agreement with a far away look, as though he'd been working it out himself. Then his attention snapped back at the mention of the vet. "Recovered? What happened? Did she get hurt? "

"I am not totally certain," the admiral confessed. "All I am aware of is that she required surgery, which our doctors are doing now, and there would be a recovery time of eight hours post-surgery." Oh, and Queen Cosette has transported over to be with her during the surgery."

At the mention of the Queen, Sprout's tail began to wag. "Of course she would. She cares so much for her pack," he replied with obvious affection in his voice.

Commander Hart smiled, and gave Sprout a knowing look. "Does someone hold a special place in his heart for the queen?"

Sprout glanced at Commander Hart. "Of course! Who wouldn't? She doesn't have huge space travel aspirations, but she really cares about her pack. The pecking order on Goblitari is well established, and it's very prosperous. You'll not find single dog or bitch who'll speak a bad word against her."

"That's fair," Hart conceded. That was pretty much the sentiment about Captain McCloud, aboard the Eagle. "Will you be excited to be returning to your own universe?"

"Oh... of course," Sprout replied but there was little excitement in his voice.

The less than enthusiastic response did not escape either of the humans. Vice Admiral Mallory thought, at first, to place a reassuring hand on the Russel Terrian's shoulder, but thought differently of doing so.

"You're still quite curious about us," Mallory said, more a statement, than a question.

Sprout grunted in agreement. "This has been a fascinating squirrel protocol. As much as I love my research, it's hard being chained to the lab-" Sprout cut off with a startled yip. "Figuratively speaking of course. Even if I wasn't loyal to my research, it's an outdated practice to chain workers to keep them from wandering off."

Both Hart and Mallory chuckled at that.

"What else can we tell you about our way of doing things?" the admiral asked.

"I wouldn't even know where to start. Much of this I never would have even thought of. I can't help but wonder if I'd even be able to find star-bone here."

Both humans exchanged a glance. It was Hart who finally asked, "Star bone?"

"It's the element we refine and synthesize to grow the Nose Sensor Arrays."

Again, the two humans exchanged a look. This time it was Mallory who replied, "We have much more to learn from you as well, Sprout."
